April Fool's

April 1st. A date synonymous with playful deception, harmless hoaxes, and the occasional groan-inducing prank. But how did this seemingly arbitrary day become the global stage for lighthearted trickery? The history of April Fool's Day is a winding path, shrouded in some mystery but peppered with fascinating cultural shifts and enduring human tendencies.

One of the most widely cited origins points to the transition from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in the 16th century. In 1582, France, under King Henry III, officially adopted the Gregorian calendar, which moved the start of the new year from the end of March/early April to January 1st. However, news traveled slowly in those days, and many people, particularly in rural areas, either didn't receive the memo or resisted the change. These individuals continued to celebrate the new year according to the old Julian calendar, and they became the target of ridicule, labeled as "April Fools." Pranks played on them included sending them on "fool's errands" or attaching paper fish to their backs – a symbolic representation of being easily caught or gullible.

However, the "calendar switch" theory, while popular, might not be the complete picture. Similar springtime festivals involving trickery and mischief existed long before the Gregorian reforms. Ancient Roman celebrations like Hilaria, held on March 25th, involved people dressing in disguises and playing jokes on each other. In India, the Holi festival, celebrated around the same time of year, features playful pranks and lighthearted deception. These earlier traditions suggest a deeper human impulse to engage in playful inversion and social levity around the vernal equinox, a time of transition and renewal.

Across Europe, the tradition of April Fool's Day took root and evolved in various forms. In Scotland, it became a two-day affair, starting with "hunting the gowk" (a gowk being a cuckoo or a fool), where people were sent on pointless errands. The second day, "Taily Day," focused on pranks played on the backside, famously involving the "kick me" sign. In England, pranks ranged from simple tricks to elaborate hoaxes, often reported in newspapers as factual events before the reveal on April 2nd.

The advent of mass media in the 20th century amplified the scale and creativity of April Fool's Day pranks. Newspapers, radio stations, and later television channels delighted in crafting elaborate and believable hoaxes, often catching a large portion of the public off guard. Think of the famous 1957 BBC report about the Swiss spaghetti harvest, which fooled many viewers into believing that spaghetti grew on trees.

In the digital age, the internet and social media have provided fertile ground for April Fool's pranks to flourish. From fake news articles and humorous product announcements to elaborate online scams (often harmless, but sometimes with malicious intent), the digital landscape becomes a minefield of potential trickery on April 1st.

Despite its sometimes dubious nature, April Fool's Day endures. It serves as a yearly reminder to not take everything too seriously, to exercise a healthy dose of skepticism, and to embrace a bit of playful absurdity. It’s a shared cultural experience that, at its best, fosters laughter and a sense of collective participation in harmless deception. While its precise origins may remain somewhat hazy, the enduring appeal of the April Fool's prank speaks to a fundamental human desire for lightheartedness and the occasional joyful subversion of the everyday.

Cybertruck

Possibly, one the ugliest cars on the market. It is now also the deadliest after exploding outside of Trump Tower. The design especially is impractical, lacks usability, comfort, and a safe driving experience. This car falls short on a number of areas.

  • Unconventional Design: angular stainless steel exterior that is easy on dings and dents
  • Limited Visibility: narrow windows are problematic on visibility and safety
  • Ride Quality: stiff suspension, mostly for off-road use, with uncomfortable driving experience on roads
  • Interior Aesthetics: ugly interior to compliment the ugly exterior
  • Unproven Technology: questionable, hit and miss technology

Hypocrisy of Climate Change Activists

Climate change activists alert the world of the effects of having a high carbon footprint. However, one only needs to look at these activists and realize how hypocritical they really are in their own lives. Take for example Greta Thunberg. She talks about climate change and yet uses a plane, lives in a house, consumes electricity, produces waste, celebrates xmas, lights up a tree, receives gifts that use wrapping paper, while complaining on the world stage as how everyone has ruined her childhood. And, all her supporting crew had to be just as hypocritical in building their own carbon footprint just to enable her to travel via a zero-emissions sailboat and jet set around the world, provide for freeze dried meals that use plastic wrapping, the use of train, and the amount of water needed to grow cotton for t-shirts. Most climate change activists can't live without electronics and internet. She even seems to have a social media presence. One generally has to use the internet to be active on social media. According to estimates, all the gadgets, the internet, and systems we use today equate to 3.7% of the global greenhouse emissions. And, when one looks at it in realistic terms, her complete carbon footprint is greater than an average individual on the planet. And, in the time that she has taken center stage, has she provided any quantifiable and qualitative evidence with a set of constructive solutions? During conferences and summits one can see her ranting to the audience but passing on technical questions for other people to answer. Is this an indication of her being totally out of touch with reality? People that posture and rant to others while not practicing what they preach makes them rather hypocritical as they appear to have lived in a very protected environment of self-entitlement and don't seem to understand the complex social constructs and the global dynamics of the world.

The Satanic Verses

'The Satanic Verses' can be downloaded from the archive for free. Don't bother buying the book as it is not a good read. In fact, it is garbage from any sense of the word. The entire book is filled with embedded hate speech. The author dispels many of his hate through the personification of characters. Not only does he hate everything and everyone, he seems to also hate himself. The book was written to offend and provoke, much of which can be seen from the quote at the beginning of the book from Daniel Defoe. The more significant bit of hate speech is directed towards women that not only incites hate but also violence. In 1989, an incident occurred against a woman in New York where six individuals after reading passages from the book went out to put it into action that conjured up their imaginations. The book not only hates on blacks, but also jews, brits, whites, women, hindus, and across the protected characteristics. In US, hate speech laws don't really exist much outside of incitement. However, in UK/EU the hate crime law can provide a way towards censorship of the book. After all freedom of speech is not absolute. One finds it surprising that there is a lot of focus around the hate for a given religion while much of the other forms of hate in the book are completely overlooked. Perhaps, this is because of racism and bigotry shared in much of the western societies towards Islam and the book provides a weapon to incite hate towards it. But, it is shocking that many do not notice the level of hate speech mentioned in the book towards women. The author is an opportunist. Who wanted to gain notoriety by being as controversial as possible. In fact, a lot of the writing is in broken sentences and swearing that do not amplify any form of literary quality. The author cannot even make up his mind whether he wants to swear in hindi or english. It reads like an indian version of an urban dictionary. This leads one to wonder why on earth would someone want to consider it for the Booker Prize. The book sales is an indicator of how it is viewed in society. Book sales increased after the fatwa. They further increased after the attack on the author. But, in between such events book sales were virtually unheard of. Many people who support the book are jumping on the bandwagon of crowd follower mentality and have never even read the book. However, the man that attacked the author may also be exercising their freedom of speech and expression. This could be compared to the egg attack on John Prescott who returned it with a punch. Book burning is also another form of freedom of speech and expression. And, apparently, one cannot even challenge the holocaust behind the curtain of freedom of speech and expression. Or, even challenge the use of additional pronouns in freedom of speech and expression. We live in a society of hypocrites.

Extracts from 'The Satanic Verses':

  • "White women -- never mind fat, Jewish, non deferential white women -- were for fucking and throwing over. What one hates in whites -- love of brown sugar -- one must also hate when it turns up, inverted, in black. Bigotry is not only a function of power."
  • "Torture. Maggie the Bitch."
  • "N****r eat white shit?"
  • "Black shit is bad?"
  • "Sister Fucking British"
  • "This country that's stuffed full of fucking old corpses"

Prologue (by Daniel Defoe, from 'The History of the Devil'):

"Satan, being thus confined to a vagabond, wandering, unsettled condition, is without any certain abode; for though he has, in consequence of his angelic nature, a kind of empire in the liquid waste of air, yet this is certainly part of his punishment, that he is....without any fixed place, or space, allowed him to rest the sole of his foot upon."

The Dog That Stepped On A Bee

This story is about a victim and an abuser. For some odd reason, society expects the man to always play the role of abuser, while the woman is expected to play the role of the victim. However, in modern day society women neither want to be seen as victims nor do they want men to be chivalrous. They want the legal system to always side with women whether it were wrong or right - to throw away the burden of proof. Whatever happened to the concept of innocent until proven guilty is a typical question one asks when the biased media is seen jumping to conclusions. Since when has the "metoo" movement just been about women? The clash of genders seems like women are all too confused about the definition of equality. Or, is it the fact they want to play the victim card when it suits them? Is the "metoo" movement more about "metoohatemen" movement? Equality is when one sees things beyond the biases of gender stereotypes. However, with equality of opportunity also comes equal levels of consequences for punishment and responsibility for actions. There should be no cause of special treatment for women just because they are women. There should be no drum down special treatment for abusers just because they are women and have softer hands or that they are smaller in stature than men. In the trial for Depp vs Heard, we see what society would define as a type of anomaly of reversed gender roles between victim and abuser. In fact, this trial gives a confident voice to male victims of domestic violence who are often laughed off by women. And, here in lies the truth. To seek the truth one must look beyond the biases and through the spectrum of evidence. Only then can one seek justice and equality. Women should acknowledge when they are wrong and learn to take responsibility for their actions just like men. When one takes an oath, they should uphold that oath to their testimony. Over the years we have seen a shift in the legal system that has gradually sided with women over men in matters of divorce, domestic violence, harassment, abuse, abortion, child custody, and discrimination. But, this only implies that no justice is truly blind. Are our legal courts becoming increasingly biased in their sentences and accountability for justice? Perhaps, it begs one to ponder on the philosophical question of whether justice is a vice or a virtue.

Entrepreneur First

Majority of investors associated with Entrepreneur First expect you to have a Phd or collaboration with someone who does have it. The funny thing is most of these investors had previously worked for companies that had become successful by founders that were college dropouts. Have there been many companies that have become successful by a Phd holder? It is very rare. Most innovators in past and present have been people with no-Phd, not even a masters, and in many cases were simply college dropouts. But, they still managed to build a successful business, engineer an innovative product, and gain investment. Looking back at the likes of Google, Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, Dell, Paypal, Facebook, and others, would any of the investors of this generation have asked back then whether they had a Phd before they received investment? Invariably, an individual with a Phd likely will not have the mindset towards taking risks and building a product that can actually sell. And, if one needs to build an entire team around them then really the value of a Phd becomes fairly redundant. Why do investors have such double standards? And, the fact that people with ideas can sometimes struggle to find investment. Perhaps, it all boils down to risk and the gamble they have to make with a potential idea as well as their return on investment. Funnily enough, 80% of all academic research amounts to nothing and holds no real qualitative or quantitative value in terms of substance and real insights. Businesses don't make any money from publishing papers, they make money from selling a viable product. In fact, in most industry sectors, innovation in organizations, is often driven by non-Phd people with many years of practical experience who have been able to spot gaps in the market or problem areas for which there is a high customer demand for solutions. The narrow-minded attitude of investors does not pay dividends and it certainly does not help any potential individuals with a viable product that may be seeking investment. However, such is the conservative attitude of many investors today either a) one has a phd, b) one has people with phd individuals on the team no matter how practically useless/clueless/inexperienced/unprofessional/unethical they may be, or c) one has a collaboration with a large multinational. Otherwise, one might struggle to convince an investor to buy into the innovative idea. Sometimes, all it takes is an investor seeking potential to invest in the individual (likability factor) and not just the product as a sum package - for that there are better alternative avenues for investment.

Hypocritical Western Holidays

Western societies are seeped in hypocritical social conundrums often brought about through capitalist commercial ideals. During Halloween we find ourselves celebrating empty pumpkins and dressing up in wickedly evil costumes. On other occasions like Thanksgiving we find ourselves being thankful only on that particular day. Why must we only be thankful to mothers on a Mother's Day and fathers on Father's Day. On Easter we celebrate all things made in shape of eggs. And, during Christmas we find the value of gift giving and lighting up trees. Turkey is also the most in demand during Thanksgiving and Christmas, even by some vegetarians. Soon after Christmas all the trees are left to die next to the rubbish bins. Unless, it is an artificial tree. When people only seem to care during the season not after the season is over. Wonder what happens to all the tree activists during Christmas time. Then as New Year period approaches it is time when an entire society is at bedrock of party and sex. Most likely also the time when major commercial vendors of condoms and alcohol are in huge demand. Holidays bring much joy for businesses. But, they also command confusion and a lot of hypocrisy for communities. Furthermore, even religious holidays are added on annually. One cannot imagine the confusion that kids would go through as they grow up to realize that such holidays really have no meaning other than to provide more reason to be with family, to breathe, relax, eat in copious amounts, and to shop without remorse.

Poppy Choice

Wearing a poppy on remembrance day should be a choice not a requirement. War should be remembered not glorified. And, who is going to honor and remember the lives of the civilians that were lost at the hands of the soldiers and in middle of such wars without just cause? Soldiers make a choice of taking part. Who gives civilians the choice to live or die in such a charade? Why should we remember soldiers that took part in unjustified wars? Wars that the public did not have a say in whether we sent our soldiers or not? Do we get a say in the cause of such wars? Many wars could have been avoided if the public had a say in it. So, no remembrance day has become a glorified event and a disrespect to the many lives that are lost in conflicts. Soldiers also have families just like civilians have families. And, one can't be forced to partake in such activities. People have different ways of remembering for which they should be allowed the freedom and personal space.

Halloween

Halloween is a very pointless event of the year. A day when people celebrate the dead, the darkness, and all things evil. A day when children are taught to beg door to door for treats and learn the humble truths of trick or treating. It is a time when people dress up in all sorts of ways to scare others or possibly to bewitch others with their closeted dark secrets. Also, the only time when pumpkins are adorn and in high demand. Partying is also remarkably a scene of experience altogether and a welcomed excuse for retailers and party goers alike.
